The transition from traditional Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) to AI Optimisation (AIO) is often discussed in technical terms. We hear about large language models (LLMs), retrieval augmented generation, and machine learning. This technical focus creates a common misconception that the future of marketing is becoming more clinical and robotic. However, as Jane Fulcher, Greenpark’s Head of Content, and Chris Andrew, CEO and Co-Founder of Scrunch, explore in their conversation during Greenpark’s AI series, the shift toward AI actually forces brands to be more human, more authentic, and more expert than ever before.

The New Quality Benchmark: High-Intent Visitors

One of the most striking insights from the series is the trade-off between volume and value. While marketers may face a future where total website traffic drops by as much as 90% as AI agents handle the top-of-funnel research, the traffic that remains is of a vastly higher quality.

When a human clicks through to your site from an AI source, they have already bypassed the “browsing” phase. They have asked the AI questions, compared options, and sought specific facts. By the time they land on your domain, they are often 3 to 10 times more likely to convert than a visitor arriving via a traditional search link. The AI has effectively acted as a high-level sales assistant, qualifying the lead before they ever reach your front door. This shift moves the focus of a website from “how many people can we attract?” to “how well can we serve the highly motivated individuals who arrive?”

Authenticity as the Ultimate Optimisation

In the old world of SEO, brands often felt forced to write for ranking. This led to the era of keyword stuffing and awkward phrasing designed to satisfy a specific algorithm. AI models, however, are trained to understand natural language. They are designed to process conversational, fact-based, and human-toned content.

Andrew highlights that because AI models are effectively “super-consumers” of information, they can detect the nuance and depth of your content. You no longer need to repeat a keyword five times to prove what a page is about. Instead, you need to provide a thorough, authoritative answer. The “trick” to AI optimisation is simply to be useful. If your content is genuinely helpful to a human, it becomes highly valuable to the AI agent tasked with finding information for that human.

The Role of Social Signals and E-E-A-T

The rise of AI has coincided with a renewed emphasis on E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness). To verify the claims made on a website, AI models look for “human signals” across the broader web. This is why social media and community platforms like Reddit, YouTube, and LinkedIn have become critical pillars of a search strategy.

Models use these platforms to verify brand expertise and authenticity. If a brand claims to be an expert on a topic, but there is no human conversation, no creator content, and no social proof to back it up, the AI is less likely to trust and recommend that brand. Authenticity is no longer a “nice to have” brand attribute; it is a technical requirement. Incorporating creator voices and fostering real human dialogue on social platforms helps the machine verify that your brand is a legitimate, trusted authority in its field.

It’s Time to go Back to Basics

The irony of the AI revolution is that it is stripping away the artificial layers of digital marketing. The old SEO “hacks” are dying, replaced by a system that rewards genuine expertise and human storytelling. By focusing on being a “source of truth” and maintaining an authentic presence across the social web, brands aren’t just preparing for a machine-led future. They are building a deeper, more meaningful connection with the humans they ultimately serve.
